4-DAY MT KENYA CLIMBING VIA NARO-MORU SIRIMO

The outstanding feature of this route is its dense forest and evidence of wildlife. You will most likely be graced with tree-loving friends like the bushbucks and Columbus monkeys on your trek. The hike begins from the West, where the headquarters of the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) for the mountain is located, at about 2400m. Although one of the most popular routes, hikers highlight the steepness and loose gravel on the trail.

Day 1

Nairobi – Met Station

Pick up from Nairobi, and a drive to Laikipia county enjoying the scenery of the Kenyan highlands to the Naro Moru park gate. At the gate, Lunch shall be served and all administrative tasks with the KWS sorted before commencing the first trekking phase. It is a short trek (3-4 hours) through an amazing bamboo forest, gaining an elevation of about 600m at the first night stop, Met Station. There will be an overnight stop, dinner shall be served.

Day 2

Met Station – Mackinder’s Camp

It is about 12km trek with an elevation gain of over 1000m across a dense bamboo and forest at the beginning then emerging from an alpine heath and the Teleki valley at the Mackinder’s camp. Lunch is served on picnic rocks before reaching the camp for the second overnight stay.

Day 3

Mackinder’s Camp – Pt Lenana

Attempt a predawn summit at Pt. Lenana (alt.4985m) to catch the beautiful sunrise. This requires about 4 hours’ trek on rocky trails and scree slopes. This is usually a dark hike but can have amazing sky views depending on the weather.
From the summit, the descent begins, and the first stop is at the Shipton’s camp (Sirimon route) where breakfast shall be served. Afterward, about a 6-hour descent via Mackinder`s Valley to the Old
Moses camp which is about 3,300m in altitude. The descent is mild, and it offers ample time to
enjoy intriguing landscapes which include the highlands before getting to the camp.

Day 4

Old Moses – Nairobi

The home stretch to catch the vehicle back to the city begins from Old Moses after breakfast. It’s about a 4-hour trek through the rain forest in chilly weather but calming sounds of chapping birds to the Sirimon Park Gate.
